MOUNT LEVEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

Durham, North Carolina

In Loving Memory

The Reverend Dr. William C. Turner, Jr.

April 26, 1948 — July 26, 2026

Pastor, Mount Level Missionary Baptist Church, 1990–2026

James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor Emeritus of the Practice of Preaching, Duke Divinity School

The transition of our beloved pastor, Reverend Dr. William C. Turner, Jr. brought tremendous sorrow to our entire church, the Durham community, and everyone who interacted with him. For over 35 years, Pastor Turner faithfully shepherded Mt. Level with compassion, integrity, and unwavering devotion.

Pastor Turner consistently demonstrated Christ’s love through his care for others and lived his ministry every day. He visited members during times of sickness and bereavement, even when he was not feeling well himself. He prayed continually for the congregation and carried the burdens of others in his heart. His presence, wisdom, kindness, and faithful leadership have shaped generations of Mt. Level members and have left an enduring legacy within our church and community.

As we mourn together, we also commit to supporting one another and honoring Pastor Turner’s legacy by coming together in prayer, with patience, and with a compassionate spirit. In the coming days, we will provide additional opportunities for the congregation to gather and share their memories of our beloved pastor.

Let us continue to pray for Pastor Turner’s family and for our entire church community. May God grant us comfort, peace, and the strength to stand together.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
—Psalm 46:1

SHEPHERD OF MOUNT LEVEL

Dr. Turner's pastoral ministry began with an assistantship in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, followed by pastorates within the United Holy Church of America at Fisher Memorial (1974–79), Faith Gospel Tabernacle (1979–81), and Mack's Chapel (1985–90). In 1990, he answered the call to Mount Level Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, where he served as pastor for thirty-six years – years that by one account, trace back to his own student days as a volunteer at the church's Vacation Bible School.

Under his leadership, Mount Level grew in faith, in facilities, and in who was called to serve.

Highlights of his tenure remembered by the congregation include:

  • A deep and abiding passion for Christian education, particularly for children — he was closely involved in Sunday School and the Christian Education Department, ensuring that all that was taught was Bible-based and sound in doctrine.
  • The establishment of two Sunday services, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Turner sharing his own pulpit at the earlier service to give young preachers and associate ministers invaluable experience.
  • The appointment of the church's first female deacon, widening the circle of leadership at Mount Level.
  • The construction of a new church building, completed under his leadership, with its mortgage ultimately paid in full.
  • A standing love for hymns, every verse of them, and a steady devotion to the children of the congregation, for whom he always made time.

Through it all, Dr. Turner was known as a preacher of preachers, a man of the pulpit whose gift for proclaiming the Word shaped generations of ministers who came up under him, and whose humility never wavered, no matter how far his reputation traveled.
